How much can electric bike commuting save you in 2024?

With the ever-increasing cost of living, it's a time when many of us are thinking about how to get the most value for money out of our lifestyles to save some much-needed cash. Commuting to work is a key area to consider, with a car estimated to cost between €364-708 per month in 2021, and prices have definitely risen since then.

Have you ever considered using an e-bike for your commute? They're a cost-effective transportation option, especially in the long run, and bring a host of benefits to our lifestyle and the planet. We've put together this guide to help you realize how much you can save on your lifestyle by e-biking.

How much can you save commuting by e-bike?

Car/motorbike fuel costs

This varies from country to country, but the monthly average for Europe is €100 for petrol and €70 for diesel. For motorbikes, it costs around €54 per month.

Parking costs

These are also a regular add-on to fuel costs, can be expensive in urban areas, and will vary depending on the time you're there. On average, parking costs €3 per hour.

Public transportation costs

Again, it varies but is estimated to be up to €237 a month, you can check rates for your country here.

Electric bike charging costs

For the 2nd half of 2023 Eurostat reported that the average household cost for electricity was €0.2847 per kWh. This is more than enough to charge your e-bike a few times without spending a lot!

Based on this example, if you were to charge your e-bike every two days, the approximate cost would be €2.70 per month, which is much, much less than the other costs listed above! Plus, parking is either free or very inexpensive compared to car parking.

Financial incentives from the government and employers

Because of the numerous benefits to individuals and society generally, many stakeholders want to encourage more people to cycle, offering schemes to help them do so; for example, some governments offer subsidies or other financial incentives to help pay for e-bikes.

Some employers also offer e-bike leasing to their employees, allowing them to use an e-bike for a set time period (usually a few years), paid for in instalments from their salary.

TENWAYS has partnerships with leasing companies in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany that make it easy for companies to help their employees buy a TENWAYS e-bike, and some of our regional dealers may also offer other leasing services.

Health and wellness savings

As well as saving on travel costs, did you know that cycling can also save you money in other areas of your lifestyle? Regular cycling can improve your mental and physical health, potentially saving on future healthcare costs, and if commuting by e-bike becomes part of your fitness routine, it could also help save on gym membership costs.

Maintenance savings

Maintaining a car is a lot more hassle and costly than maintaining an e-bike; the average price of an oil change varies by car type and region, but on average it's €145 in the UK and €45 in Spain. Engine repairs cost hundreds of euros, and insurance is hundreds and sometimes thousands on an annual basis!

To maintain an electric bike, it's usually the battery, chain, tires and brakes that need maintenance and/or repair. The cost depends on the bike specialist, but in terms of replacement, a battery would be the most expensive (typically several hundred euros), but it can last around 3-5 years. Per tire generally costs around €30-80 and will last for thousands of kilometers. All brake components could add up to €150 (€30 - €60 for basic mechanical disc brake sets and €80 - €150 for mid-range hydraulic disc brake sets), but a single brake part would be less.

At TENWAYS, we're proud to have created high quality e-bikes with components that require very little maintenance. If you have any problems, our highly responsive customer support team aims to respond to all inquiries within 24 hours. During our e-bike warranty period, if an eligible problem is identified, we'll send free replacement parts and cover any dealer replacement costs.

Saving the environment

Using an e-bike helps protect the planet, so by using this eco-friendly, zero-emissions form of mobility, you can help reduce CO2 and other harmful emissions from entering the atmosphere. When you buy a TENWAYS e-bike, you can also help the environment with our reforestation efforts - our riders have already helped us plant over 10,000 trees!

Conclusion

Cycling is a great combination of exercise and transportation that helps you save for a better future while protecting our planet. It's a fun way to experience the city while getting from A to B quickly, and it's cheaper and less hassle than a car and public transportation, allowing you to travel on your own schedule and route for an easier, healthier lifestyle.
