City vs. hybrid e-bikes: Find the right fit for your ride

Choosing an e-bike is the start of a journey to a healthier you and a healthier planet. However, if you live in the cities or towns, the line between city e-bikes (often called urban or commuter) and hybrid e-bikes can be blurred, so finding the right one for your lifestyle can seem a little complicated.

We've put together a guide to help you differentiate between the two, ultimately uncovering the right e-bike for your needs and setting you up for seamless riding experiences for the long haul!

What is a city e-bike?

This type of electric bike is generally designed to get riders around cities more efficiently and comfortably for short to medium distances.

They tend to have a comfortable upright riding position and a step-through frame, with components that allow them to maneuver quickly through traffic on bike paths or paved roads.

What kind of riders is it for?

City e-bikes are designed for easy riding around town, perfect if you need an e-bike for commuting, running errands and jumping to local recreation spots on routes that are mostly flat.

They feature comfortable, sporty, step-through frames with a range of 60-100 km, top speeds of 25 km/h, and discreet Gates belt drives that provide thousands of kilometers of maintenance-free riding.

What is a hybrid e-bike?

As the name suggests, it's a versatile e-bike that combines the features of a city bike and a mountain bike for a variety of terrains and purposes; it's designed to perform well on smooth city streets, but it's also rugged enough to comfortably handle varied terrain, with higher motor power and battery capacity, wider tires, gearing, and suspension.

What kind of rider are they for?

A hybrid e-bike offers great flexibility and power for smooth, hilly, gravel, dirt and country roads, so it is great if you need an e-bike that can handle all types of surfaces for commuting, touring or longer trips.

AGO X: our hybrid e-bike, perfect for urban and off-road riding

It's versatile enough for smooth, fast rides around town, as well as rural adventures and longer trips. It also comes with a rear rack, mudguard and kickstand for added riding comfort and convenience.

City and hybrid e-bikes: key differences

Let's take a closer look at both types of electric bikes to help you decide which is best for your riding needs, with detailed examples of our iconic city e-bike, the CGO600, and the hybrid e-bike, the AGO X.

Riding purpose and uses

  • The city e-bike is designed for short to medium distance rides such as commuting, errands and local social rides.
  • The hybrid e-bike can be used for the above as well as hills and uneven terrain in the city, recreational riding such as country trails, and longer trips.

Comfort

  • City e-bikes tend to have lightweight, seamless designs for easy handling and fast navigation, with comfortable frames that provide a relaxed riding position.
  • Hybrid electric bikes are not as lightweight as city e-bikes because they are built with high performance features for extra comfort on difficult terrain and longer rides. (The AGO X does this with a plush Selle saddle, adjustable handlebar and SUNTOUR suspension fork).

Motor, power and range

  • City bikes tend to have lighter batteries with moderate motors designed for their purpose of riding on smoother terrain and shorter distances.(The CGO600 has a battery capacity of 36V, 7Ah for a range of up to 70 km, with a Mivice M070 rear hub motor that has a maximum torque of 40 Nm.)
  • Hybrid e-bikes tend to have heavier batteries and more powerful motors to give them more energy for their riding purpose to tackle varied terrain and longer trips.  (The AGO X has a battery capacity of 36V, 14Ah for a range of up to 100 km, with a powerful Bafang M410 mid-drive motor that has a maximum torque of 80 Nm.)

Gearing

  • City e-bikes tend to prioritize ease of use and efficiency with minimal gearing for riding on flat paved surfaces.(The CGO600 uses a single-speed drivetrain for easy city riding).
  • Hybrid e-bikes have multiple gears to help you tackle complex terrain and inclines. (AGO X has a Shimano 10-speed drivetrain for high performance on a variety of urban and rural surfaces).

Conclusion

We hope our guide has helped you decide whether a city or hybrid e-bike is best for you! Ultimately, it comes down to what you need it for and where you're going to use it. A city bike is best for shorter, medium-distance trips on flatter paved roads or bike paths, and a hybrid is more appropriate if you'll be riding on unpaved surfaces and tackling hills in the city or countryside. Whether you're looking for an easy, peppy commuting partner, a more stealthy, adventurous ride, or something in between, TENWAYS' range of e-bikes has got you covered.
